Vice-Chancellor's message to students

I hope you have settled into the academic year and are enjoying your course. It is fantastic to see so many of you on campus, and to see our libraries, laboratories, and teaching spaces buzz with activity…

That’s not to say campus has been quiet; it has been an exceptionally busy few months. Over the summer, the University played an important part in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. We were the host venue for hockey and squash, and the Vale became the main (and most popular!) athletes’ village. Thousands of students and staff were involved in the Games, and we are all incredibly proud that our students and alumni were winners of 12 medals.

One of my favourite parts of being Vice-Chancellor is that I get to meet with many of you, and I am looking forward to holding open office sessions later this month and early next year. You can sign up on this Eventbrite link, and talk to me about anything you like. Don’t worry if these slots have already been filled; we will schedule further sessions soon.

In less positive news, the economic backdrop has become increasingly challenging since I last wrote to you, and I know many of you are concerned about the rising cost of living. You will have received an email that outlines some of the actions we are taking, and we will keep this Cost of Living page updated with new support and initiatives.

Studying can be as daunting as it is exciting, and I know navigating student life can sometimes feel challenging. If you need help or support, there are some excellent resources about health, welfare, and wellbeing on our website and the website of your Guild of Students. There’s also advice on what to do if you’re worried about a friend – and I encourage you all to look out for each other.

I wish you all the very best with your studies,

Best wishes,

Adam
